Gloucestershire Libraries have been awarded a £95,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to launch a new project aimed at preserving personal memories of Gloucestershire’s past.

In partnership with The Roses Theatre and Gloucestershire Archives, Roots and Reflections will provide older residents with the opportunity to record their personal recollections of local life and the environment.

These stories, often at risk of being forgotten, will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. They will also be creatively reinterpreted by six youth groups through The Roses Theatre, encouraging meaningful dialogue between generations and a stronger connection to the county’s heritage.

The project will culminate in a series of public performances and digital resources that reflect the diversity and richness of Gloucestershire’s communities.

Participants will take part in interviews and creative workshops exploring their connections to various places. The resulting archives will be preserved at Gloucestershire Archives, safeguarding local history and promoting greater environmental awareness and inclusion across generations.

Story recording sessions will be held in the following libraries:

  • Tewkesbury
  • Cheltenham
  • Stroud
  • Chipping Campden
  • Coleford
  • Gloucester

Residents can visit their local library or the Gloucestershire Libraries website for up-to-date information and booking details coming soon!

I’m delighted Gloucestershire Libraries are launching this important project and I would like to thank The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support. Libraries are more than buildings filled with books - they’re the beating heart of our communities

Roots and Reflections offers a unique way to bring generations together, bringing the past and present together through personal storytelling. By giving older residents a platform to share their memories, and inviting young people to creatively respond, we’re fostering deeper connections across age groups and preserving memories. Gloucestershire’s stories deserve to be heard, and this project ensures they won’t be forgotten.
Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member for libraries at Gloucestershire County Council
