What is Greener Together?

Launched in 2021, our Greener Together initiative explores ways in which libraries can help to mitigate climate change, raise awareness of the global climate challenges that we face, and support individuals and local communities who want to take practical steps towards leading a greener, lower carbon lifestyle.

Free access to information is at the heart of the library service. We’ve been helping Gloucestershire residents access the information they need for many years now.  As libraries, it’s what we do!

We want to make it easy for everyone to find reliable information about the key issues at the forefront of the climate change emergency via our network of county libraries.  We want to join in the conversation, and we want to make a difference too.  We are committed to developing more sustainable working practices within our own teams and taking action alongside our communities, so that we can all go greener, together.

Borrow Don’t Buy

Whether you’re actively looking for ways to make changes, or just want to learn more about climate change, check out your local library.  We have been busy curating an all new Climate Collection - a range of practical, informative, and engaging books to help create conversation around climate change, and provide you with reliable, up to date reading material.

Our collection covers a range of topics, from reducing our carbon footprint to growing our own vegetables, recycling and upcycling, food waste reduction and the different ways in which we can protect and appreciate our natural world.  Available to browse and borrow – or click and collect - from your local library, we’re really excited to be able to share them with you.

To find out more about the Greener Together initiative and to discover our new collection, head over to your local library.

Halloween Costume Swap

All county libraries are running Halloween costume swaps this Autumn.

The scary truth is an estimated 7 million Halloween costumes are thrown away every year, adding to 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste. That’s the same as 83 million plastic bottles.

Donate a costume to any library between 23 September and 7 October

Swap an old costume for a new one between 7 October and 1 November

 - Accessories, whole and part costumes accepted

 - Donations will be accepted throughout the swap

 - Discover swaps across all county libraries

 - You can still take a costume home if you don’t have one to swap

 - Both adult and child costumes welcome

You can find lots more ideas here about how to have a sustainable Halloween

Library of Things

Just like borrowing a book from the library, except instead of a book you can borrow handy items, like steam cleaners, DIY tools or a sewing machine!

Where is the Library of Things?

Charlton Kings Library

Church Piece, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham GL53 8AR

There is a car park behind the library, just use this postcode to find it GL53 8JN

How do I borrow an item?

You must be a library member to borrow items. Pop into your library to join or go online.

In the library you will see a display of recycled DVD cases showing which items are available to borrow, select the DVD case and take to the desk.

Library staff will give you a borrower agreement to fill in and issue the item to your library account and give you the item you’d like to borrow.

You can borrow the item for 1 week. Items have to be returned to Charlton Kings Library. Please return the item cleaned and as you borrowed it so it’s ready for the next person to borrow.

Borrowing the items is free, however we welcome a donation towards ongoing repair and maintenance costs, there is a donation box at the desk.

What if the item I’d like isn’t available?

You can reserve items just as you would a book via the Library App or website. Once the item is ready for you, we’ll let you know. You then have 3 days to come and collect it. You can search the full list of items.
