As Earth Day 2025 approaches, Gloucestershire is set to host a variety of engaging and eco-conscious events across multiple libraries. These activities aim to inspire the community to take action for a more sustainable future while enjoying art, dance, storytelling, and hands-on workshops.

Dance & Storytelling: A Celebration of Birds and Nature

Bird Nerd & the Red List

Bishop's Cleeve Library – Saturday, 12 April – 13:00 – 14:00

A captivating dance theatre performance by Marie-Louise Flexen, accompanied by a soundtrack from Steven Skinley. This 30-minute performance highlights endangered birds such as the Lark, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Swift, and Nightingale. A Q&A session follows the performance, making it an engaging experience for all ages.

The Emperor & the Nightingale

Stroud Library – Saturday, 26 April – 14:00 – 15:00

A special interactive storytelling session featuring the classic tale The Emperor and the Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen. Dancer Marie-Louise Flexen and author Steven Skinley bring the story to life, followed by a creative bird mask crafting session for children aged 5-10.

Sustainable Living Workshops

 

Cooking for a Sustainable Future

Oakley Library – Tuesday, 15 April – 10:00-12:30

In partnership with Adult Education, this workshop teaches participants how to reduce food waste, use eco-friendly ingredients, and practice sustainable cooking. Open to ages 19 and up, attendees will leave with valuable skills to create a more environmentally friendly kitchen.

Reclaim, Rework, Rewear – T-Shirt Upcycling Workshop

Up Hatherley Library – Tuesday, 22 April – 15:00-17:00
Quedgeley Library – Wednesday, 23 April – 14:30-16:30

Fashion meets sustainability in this upcycling workshop led by Trudi Price. Participants (ages 13+) will learn creative ways to repurpose old t-shirts with minimal sewing, reducing textile waste and revamping their wardrobe in an eco-friendly way.

Eco-Friendly Transportation & Bike Safety

Earth Day Family Rides with ThinkTravel

Families are invited to join a guided bike ride, learning essential cycling safety tips along the way. A certified mechanic will be available beforehand for free bike checks to ensure a smooth and safe ride.

Spring into Gear – Drop-In Bike Checks

Cyclists can bring their bikes for free safety checks and minor adjustments from RP BikeTech mechanics. An excellent opportunity to get bikes in top shape for spring riding.

Meet the Author: Charlotte Middleton

Join celebrated children's author Charlotte Middleton for a reading of Christopher Nibble, an eco-conscious tale that encourages young readers to care for the environment. This event includes a fun Q&A and craft session.

The Green Pledge Exhibition

Various Libraries – Wednesday, 2 April to Wednesday, 4 September

This travelling exhibition features banners, eco-themed art pieces, and interactive heritage activities, encouraging visitors to reflect on climate change and take action for a greener future. Highlights include a stunning stained glass piece and a unique grandfather clock display in select Forest of Dean libraries.
