- This is your first Library Challenge as Head of Service. What are you most looking forward to about the challenge?
I’ve been involved with libraries during the summer for what feels like forever. As a child, I practically lived in my local library during the summer months—it was my second home. That love of reading carried through to my own children, who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge every year without fail.
When I began working with Surrey Libraries, it felt like everything had come full circle. I had the joy of helping others join the challenge, running events, and sharing in the excitement that fills the library each summer. There’s something truly special about the buzz that the reading challenge brings—watching children light up as they discover new books and stories is endlessly rewarding.
This year, I’m especially excited to see how we’re approaching the challenge in new and creative ways. It’s always evolving, and I can’t wait to see what happens this year in Gloucestershire
- If you could pick a Natural World theme, what would it be and why?
I absolutely love water—whether it’s the calm of a lake or the vastness of the sea. I regularly swim in both, but it’s the underwater world that truly captivates me. The Red Sea, where I’ve had the incredible experience of scuba diving, holds a special place in my heart.
If I had my way (and could breathe underwater 😊), I’d live there among the coral reefs and shimmering fish. And of course, I’d build a library!
- Why do you think libraries are important to families?
Libraries are the perfect introduction to the world of books and creativity. They offer so much more than shelves of stories—they’re vibrant community spaces where children can experience the joy of storytime in a group, sing rhymes, explore crafts, and discover the magic of live performances.
Families can visit their local library and each person—no matter their age—can find a book that speaks to them. They can sit together in a bright, welcoming space, read, listen, create, and connect. These experiences don’t just entertain—they uplift moods, teach sharing and listening, support early literacy, encourage social skills, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
Libraries are not just important—they’re essential. They enrich lives in countless ways, and everyone should know just how powerful and joyful these spaces can be.
- How have libraries inspired your creativity or imagination?
I absolutely adore books—both reading and listening.
One of my greatest joys is borrowing books from the library. It’s a treasure trove of knowledge, offering endless opportunities to explore new subjects. When I find an author I enjoy, I can dive into their entire collection without limits. And attending author talks to hear them speak about their work, their lives, and their passions is always deeply inspiring.
Our local library has also been a magical place for my children. They’ve attended various shows and performances there, which sparked their love for theatre and live arts. It’s amazing to see how these experiences shape young minds.
What inspires me most is that all of this is accessible to everyone. Libraries are vibrant, welcoming spaces that bring people together, ignite curiosity, and nurture creativity. They make me incredibly happy—and I want to shout it from the rooftops: libraries are amazing!
